One of the fun things to do at Mobile World Congress is wander around Samsung's booth. This is a stock...

One of the most entertaining activities you can do at the Mobile World Congress is to walk the Samsung Display stand. This is a division of Samsung, one of the many that it has, responsible for research and development of the panel. If we have TriFold on the market today, it is because we saw its prototype displayed here several years ago. That is why watching their stand is very entertaining, because it shows the development that the company is working on the hat.Whether they see the light or not is another matter, but the offer is good.

OLED panels are everywhere.Samsung, along with LG and BOE, is one of the few companies that can produce OLED panels. So it makes sense that companies want to put them everywhere. Not only in high-end mobile phones, which are already everywhere, or in TVs, but in every possible device, be it a controller, a console or a virtual assistant with AI.

From small to regular size. One of the prototypes we saw was a phone that could roll vertically. The device has a motor that opens the screen up and hides it like a blind and allows you to have a compact phone and a more elongated panel if you want to play games or read.Very interesting, despite some flaws.

The important thing is that, rolled up, what in another context would be an aluminum edge would, on this occasion, be a screen, also very exposed to all kinds of misfortune in the pocket, on the ground, to blows, etc. It's a striking concept, but perhaps it makes more sense on a laptop where, in fact, we've already started to see it.

Also, Samsung is involved. We have also seen this folding panel technology in tablet and laptop form factor. The last one is similar to Lenovo's proposal and by opening the screen it goes from 13 to 17 inches. This process, which is still in its infancy, is very useful if we think about a device that combines innovation and development.

On a tablet that can be understood as a portable external monitor, the panel goes from a panoramic format to a 4:3 format, which is practically 1:1, which will be of little use when opening various applications and office tasks.Without a doubt, where the roll-up format is going to shine is in medium/large panels.Whether we see them on the streets or not... only time will tell.

From big to bigger. One of the most interesting prototypes was this trilaptop.Unlike the TriFold, which has three screens, the two folds of this device take the form of a keyboard and a flip screen.By default, it's a normal laptop, but when we unfold the screen, it's like putting another 13-inch panel on top.Useful, very useful, especially for programming. In addition, the screen is not too thick when unfolded, so the laptop, at least in theory, should not weigh more than necessary, although it will be heavier than usual.

So far it's normal. Now let's move on to the weirdest concepts. The first is a folding console. This device, which clearly resembles the Nintendo Switch, has a folding panel that, at least in theory, tries to make the portable console even more portable. The concept is interesting and I can imagine such a console even in a few years, although perhaps the price would be higher than the 400-550 euros we are used to.

The second is a controller with a central screen.Center touch panels aren't new, see Sony's DualShock and DualSense, but adding a screen opens up a whole range of possibilities. That screen can be part of the HUD, provide actions, provide textual information, or interact with the game in some way through gestures or quick touches.Very curious, one of those ideas that I wouldn't be surprised if they were implemented sooner or later.

The necklace is beautiful. But the idea that takes the cake is the necklace. It is, like everything else, an idea, but the idea is unique. What if, in the same way you can change the appearance of your neck, you can change the image of your neck? This is a great tool, well, something common when we want the screen to be popular. In a few years we'll see a diamond necklace with a GIF of a spinning diamond?I have no proof, but I have no doubts.

Space for Micro-LED.Samsung also took the opportunity to show some progress in Micro-LED, a technology called the Holy Grail of panels: black OLED, LCD light, without damage or bloom. The problem is that they are very expensive because the manufacturing is complicated. At the moment, we only see them on televisions whose prices exceed Spanish salaries, but on average Samsung has worked to bring them to a minimum doubt. The key, not the design, is the good design of the increase in color and brightness, which, in this case, reaches 7,000 nits.

Be that as it may, it is clear that we are moving into a world full of screens with pre-printed canvases.Samsung wants to be there and has been giving us progress for a while.Concepts are just that, concepts, a demonstration of the power they can get in their ovens, but if the TriFold is on the market today, who knows if in a few years we will see a laptop with a folding screen or a large necklace with a screen?
