Cardiologist Alejandro Meretta highlighted in Vivo that this is more common than it seems. He warned that it is essential to stop smoking as soon as possible and take care of respiratory infections.
Director of the Core Scholarship at the ICBA Cardiovascular Institute (MN 65971), Dr. In his weekly column on Live, Alejandro Meretta addresses the key issues surrounding chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with particular reference to its relationship with smoking and the impact of low-income people.
"The so-called history of smoker's cough is now a sign of actual lung damage. Damage cannot be prevented."
These lectures are conducted as a live discussion, during the morning program, led by Gonza Sánchez, Maru DuffArt and Cecilia Boufflet.
In the framework of next week's World COPD Day, Merotta stressed: "This disease affects between 15% and 20% of the population over 40 years. It is more common than it seems and has a huge social and health burden."
Meretta attributed the origins of COPD to chronic exposure to tobacco smoke and biomass (smoke caused by wood, coal or environmental pollution), although she emphasized that tobacco was the main enemy.
Smoking, especially in early adulthood, increases in the lungs.
Regarding the common misunderstanding of "smoker's cough", Meretta emphasizes: "It is not a simple discomfort. If it occurs, it indicates that the disease has progressed. Often, smokers tend to minimize these first symptoms when it is time to take action and consult a professional."
The Caphiologist studied how the constant current was caused by the smoke attacking the parts of the stomach."The structure of the lung is ready to work as a good thing. But when it is attacked, it does not smoke, the body, it is stopped by the skin
Owe, Mecete means that it is important that they take signs that do not "
What is the treatment of COPD?
Modern treatment, according to experts, has two main directions: eliminating or reducing the damage (smoking cessation) and introducing the latest generation of pharmacology. "Today we have long-acting bronchodilators and antimuscarinics. The main thing is to stop the source of aggression as soon as possible, treat respiratory infections and pulmonary rehabilitation. Inhaled corticosteroids do not have a central role as in asthma, except in specific cases, the severity is different."
The specialist remembers a time when smoking was tolerated and even publicized within the medical profession.
Regarding the progression of the disease, Meretta warned: "Without treatment and changes in habits, the lungs lose more and more oxygen capacity. Not only respiratory failure occurs: the right heart is also affected because it has to pump blood against a hard and fibrous lung. When this happens, the so-called 'heart failure' is a real condition."
The doctor also said: "Compare in the classes of the most difficult classes, among other things, because of the number of diseases and the unchanging and bad."
In this sense, they are asking to reinforce policies, enhance information campaigns and guarantee access to early diagnosis.
Looking to the future, Meretta said: "The challenge is to prevent, diagnose early, contain the damage and above all reduce inequality. It is a 'silent' disease, but it has a great weight in society. Action must be taken on all fronts."
COPD is characterized by chronic airflow limitation. It is characterized by four main symptoms:
- constant cough
- take a deep breath
- Tightness in the chest
